More than a dozen leading comedians, humorists and commentators to wash ashore on Nantucket from Wednesday, July 16 through Saturday, July 19 for 7th annual Nantucket Comedy Festival. The four-day festival includes women’s night, kids night, Boston-NY Comedy SmACKdown, cast members of NBC series Parks and Recreation and VIP events for pass holders only. Proceeds benefit remarkable Stand Up & Learn program for youth.
With just a few days left for discounted all-access passes for this year’s Nantucket Comedy Festival, producers have announced the first of comedy legends and headlining stars from stage, film and television who are set to appear.
Witty and erudite television pioneer Dick Cavett, noted for his early influence on the TV talk show format, will receive the festival’s prized Man from Nantucket Award. Each summer, the award honors an influential comedian, writer or performer from the fields of journalism, film or comedy.
Previous Man from Nantucket honoree Joe Scarborough, former U.S. Congressman and co-host of Morning Joe on MSNBC-TV, returns with his insightful observations and commentary on U.S. politics and culture. Scarborough will host and, if needed, act as referee for the festival’s popular Boston vs. New York Comedy SmACKdown. The event pits comedy teams from Boston and New York battling each other for audience favor after multiple bouts of joke telling.
John Hodgman, the humorist and widely published author who has appeared since 2006 in a variety of personas on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, also brings his ironic brand of humor to NCF stages. Popular stand-up comedian Tom Cotter, runner-up in the comedy category for the 2012 season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent, has also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Last Comic Standing.
Actor and comedian Mike O’Malley has appeared in movies and televised series including Yes Dear, My Name is Earl, and in his recent role as Kurt’s sympathetic father Burt Hummel on Glee. During the festival, he’ll emcee a question and answer session for audience members with accomplished comedy performers and writers.
Cast members of the hit NBC comedy series Parks and Recreation are set to show film clips, reveal behind-the-scenes stories and present stand-up routines. Movie director and producer Peter Farrelly, known especially as producer-director of such hit films as Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary and The Three Stooges, will interview Cavett in a special event for festival pass holders only.
Other comedians including women comics, writers and commentators will be added in coming weeks.
Most festival performances are held in the modern comfort of Nantucket’s historic Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center.
Passes for all festival events remain available at a pre-festival discount rate through May 1 only.
The reduced price of $1,250 for all-access passes is offered for the first time in the history of Nantucket Comedy Festival. The festival pass guarantees admission and preferred seating at all festival events and includes invitations to private parties, events featuring performers in private homes and recognition in the festival program. After May 1, festival passes will be priced at $1,500.
The festival supports and further develops the remarkable Stand Up & Learn educational program, designed to inspire creativity, collaboration and self-confidence in young participants through comedy and performance. Year-round workshops welcome kids from 8-18 to create and collaborate with fellow students then perform their routines for family and friends. NCF’s workshops for kids have been held since 2009 in cooperation with public and private schools on Nantucket and elsewhere.
A Stand Up & Learn workshop during the festival week will end with a performance by the students. “This isn’t just about comedy,” said Kevin Flynn, founding executive director of the festival. “It’s about helping kids tap into their creativity and gain self-confidence.”
Support for Nantucket Comedy Festival and Stand Up & Learn comes from Nantucket Golf Club Foundation, Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines, The White Elephant Hotel on Nantucket and other businesses and individuals. ReMain Nantucket is lead sponsor of the 2013-2104 Stand Up & Learn series of Nantucket workshops, which so far has included 80 students.
